The interesting thing about watercolours is someti The interesting thing about watercolours is sometimes one can patiently work with them for hours to create a picture, which will seem strained in the end. Yet other times, one can take random colours, splash them freely on paper, and get satisfying results!

This is the case with making watercolour hearts. My kids and I tried a variety of resist techniques (crayons and watercolour resist pen mostly, though we also tried masking tape), then splashed some colours (liquid watercolours), and made a bunch of valentines. It was a lot of fun!

You can look up a detailed description of the process by searching "watercolour hearts" on the blog.

Looking for ways to introduce Black History Month Looking for ways to introduce Black History Month to children?

Discussing quotes by inspirational Black scientists, artists, and activists can be an excellent start to the topic. Here I created a poster that doubles as a colouring page and includes twelve inspirational quotes. It is free to download and print! You can find it on the blog if you search for "Black history poster"

One of my favourite quotes is by Katherine Johnson, the woman who calculated flight trajectories of many historic space missions, including the Apollo 11 flight to the moon. She said, “You are no better than anyone else, and no one is better than you.” The poster also features Maja Angelou, Alexandre Dumas, Rosa Parks, Charles Drew, Ella Fitzgerald, Gordon Parks, and many more.

AWESOME BOOK ALERT! When my husband brought this AWESOME BOOK ALERT!

When my husband brought this book from the library and said it was among the books I ordered for a pick-up, I was like, "What?! Killer Underwear Invasion?! No way, it must have been a mistake!"

Then I looked at the tagline of the book. "How to spot fake news, disinformation, and conspiracy theories." Oh. Actually... I probably DID order this book a while ago, and the library just received it. "Killer Underwear Invasion" was only published in September 2022.

As a homeschooling mom, I have the privilege of teaching my kids whatever I feel is essential. Reading - check. Addition and subtraction - check. World history - in progress. Cooking - in progress. Critical thinking is in progress as well!

This book makes tackling the topic of fake news and disinformation a breeze. It is written in a kid-friendly language with relatable examples (which one might even call funny, except we, adults, noticed they were frightfully close to reality). At the same time, it is not oversimplified, tackling a variety of subjects, such as why people create fake news or why other people choose to believe disinformation.

I thought it was an excellent book for my 10-year-old son. He apparently did, too, as I only read half of it aloud in my first go. My son promptly finished reading it by himself. Then he re-read it. And then, he asked me to finish reading it aloud, so we could discuss it. That's the best review that a 10-year-old can give! At the same time, my 6-year-old enjoyed it as well. I saw her with it just this morning. The comic book format makes it really appealing to kids.

I think I might be buying a copy for our home library. I like the idea of my kids leafing through it whenever they want at their leisure.

15 BLACK HISTORY PAPER DOLLS Children enjoy creat 15 BLACK HISTORY PAPER DOLLS

Children enjoy creating paper dolls and playing with them. But when talking about important historical figures, do costumes really matter? Certainly not as much as all the biographical details that are included on the accompanying cards of this set of fifteen Black history paper dolls.

However, costumes matter too. They give a fascinating historical and cultural perspective on these people and their time. So, there is a separate information card included for costumes. With this set, you can learn about the significance of headscarves, as well as why people in the 18th century wore wigs.

Find the paper dolls on the blog by searching "Black History paper dolls"!

Christmas Guess Who is a game of deduction, similar to the traditional Guess Who Game, but instead of appearances, players focus on their attributes – what countries they visit, what mode of transportation they use, whether they leave a present or not, and so on. Christmas Guess Who is easy to set up and a ton of fun to play.

If there is one Christmas activity we do year after year, it is playing this game! :) You can find it by clicking on the link in the profile and searching "Christmas Guess Who".

A few weeks ago, we watched “LEGO Masters”, a A few weeks ago, we watched “LEGO Masters”, a TV show of Lego building competitions. The show renewed our kids’ interest in LEGO building.

We have a marvellous LEGO collection at our house. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get played with as often as it should. Normally, we are all up for open-ended play, but seeing how a show with LEGO building challenges inspired my kids to play with it more than usual, I wondered if the open-endedness of it may sometimes be just… too much?

Sometimes deciding what to create is half the job. A list of creative prompts get the job started! That’s why I ended up creating a set of 70 LEGO building cards for my kids. They are now available for free on my blog for everyone to use.

Nature study can include a variety of topics. Some Nature study can include a variety of topics. Some of them are pretty massive - the atmosphere, plate tectonics, and climate change. Our new Nature Trivia (available on the blog!) is different. It is about the small things that capture our attention and stop us in our tracks. It is about the sense of wonder that nature inspires in us, whether we are adults or children.

Have you ever paused and marvelled at the intricate shape of a snowflake, the pearlescent gleam of a seashell or the vibrant colours of fall foliage? I thought about them as I created the list of topics for this game - snow, seashells, leaves, fungi, rainbows, teeth and tusks, decomposition, corals, flowers, and many more. They are all insignificant in a way, but together they create this wonderful world around us.

I hoped that the game could help children discover a few of the amazing stories that are hidden in plain sight in nature and also inspire them to research more topics after they are done with the game.

Besides that, Nature Trivia is also a fun game to bring along as you head off on nature outings. My children absolutely love playing trivia games while we drive! They help us pass the time, and everyone can participate, even the driver. It doesn't hurt that the game packs into a nice stack of cards that you can easily bring along.
