A couple of weeks ago, our daughter turned eight.

A couple of weeks ago, our daughter turned eight. For half a year before that, she had been into Pokémon, so in preparation for her birthday, I confidently bought her Pokémon balloons, Pokémon comic books, a Pokémon game, and a Pokémon stuffie. Suddenly, a week before her birthday she got completely infatuated with the game Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Actually, it wasn't even the game itself, but one character from it - an anthropomorphic bird called Tulin. She asked if a real-life Tulin could visit her on her birthday. If a visit from a real-life anthropomorphic bird proved impossible to organize, she would really love a toy of this character.

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is certainly a popular game, but not so popular that I could run to a store and buy a toy of a minor character from it. To be honest, when I did a search, I could only find handmade stuffed toys, and it didn't look like they would arrive in time for my daughter's birthday—more like a month after it.

So, my husband and I decided to make one. We spent two full days working on it, barely making it in time, but we did finish it.

...And can you guess what happened? If you have young kids, you probably can. My daughter liked our handmade Tulin a lot, but by the time her birthday came, her fascination with the anthropomorphic bird sort of ended. It happens: some interests last for months, and some are very intense, but only last for a few days. I cannot always predict what it is going to be.

My husband and I enjoyed working on Tulin, though! Swipe to see the work-in-progress shots.

Valentine's Day doesn't always have the most amazing reputation. I bet you heard someone say at least once, "It's just one of those commercialized holidays created by greeting card companies!"

...Which isn't true.

As a part of our new Valentine's Day unit study, students are asked to estimate how many people celebrate Valentine's Day in different countries (more than half/about half/less than half); afterwards, they can check their guesses.

The interesting thing about watercolours is sometimes one can patiently work with them for hours to create a picture, which will seem strained in the end. Yet other times, one can take random colours, splash them freely on paper, and get satisfying results!

This is the case with making watercolour hearts. My kids and I tried a variety of resist techniques (crayons and watercolour resist pen mostly, though we also tried masking tape), then splashed some colours (liquid watercolours), and made a bunch of valentines. It was a lot of fun!

Discussing quotes by inspirational Black scientists, artists, and activists can be an excellent start to the topic. Here I created a poster that doubles as a colouring page and includes twelve inspirational quotes. It is free to download and print! One of my favourite quotes is by Katherine Johnson, the woman who calculated flight trajectories of many historic space missions, including the Apollo 11 flight to the moon. She said, “You are no better than anyone else, and no one is better than you.” The poster also features Maja Angelou, Alexandre Dumas, Rosa Parks, Charles Drew, Ella Fitzgerald, Gordon Parks, and many more.

AWESOME BOOK ALERT!

When my husband brought this book from the library and said it was among the books I ordered for a pick-up, I was like, "What?! Killer Underwear Invasion?! No way, it must have been a mistake!"

Then I looked at the tagline of the book. "How to spot fake news, disinformation, and conspiracy theories." Oh. Actually... I probably DID order this book a while ago, and the library just received it. "Killer Underwear Invasion" was only published in September 2022.

As a homeschooling mom, I have the privilege of teaching my kids whatever I feel is essential. Reading - check. Addition and subtraction - check. World history - in progress. Cooking - in progress. Critical thinking is in progress as well!

This book makes tackling the topic of fake news and disinformation a breeze. It is written in a kid-friendly language with relatable examples (which one might even call funny, except we, adults, noticed they were frightfully close to reality). At the same time, it is not oversimplified, tackling a variety of subjects, such as why people create fake news or why other people choose to believe disinformation.

I thought it was an excellent book for my 10-year-old son. He apparently did, too, as I only read half of it aloud in my first go. My son promptly finished reading it by himself. Then he re-read it. And then, he asked me to finish reading it aloud, so we could discuss it. That's the best review that a 10-year-old can give! At the same time, my 6-year-old enjoyed it as well. I saw her with it just this morning. The comic book format makes it really appealing to kids.

I think I might be buying a copy for our home library. I like the idea of my kids leafing through it whenever they want at their leisure.
