Make a Lantern Card: “You’re the Light of My Life”

There are plenty of stereotypical images that can be used to good effect when making a card to celebrate an event, but a handmade card to celebrate your love for someone may require something more personal. When creating a card for my husband, I cut our silhouettes...

Children say the funniest and the most sincere thi Children say the funniest and the most sincere things when asked the right questions! That’s why filling in a questionnaire like this one can bring very satisfying results – and an unforgettable personalized gift. Free to print on the blog!

If you are looking for a way to include a child or several children in making a gift for Father’s Day, Dad’s birthday, or any other holiday, this poster can be it. Slip the pages to the kids and have them secretly fill in the questionnaire, then pair the finished posters with whatever other present you might be preparing. ;)

The templates include a variety of terms for a father: Dad, Daddy, Dada, Father, and Papa. There are also templates for creating posters for Grandpa, Granddad, Grampy, and Pop. And if your family uses a different name, feel free to use the blank template. With its help, you can easily create a poster for a stepfather, an uncle, a brother, or a guardian.

A few years ago, my then-4-year-old son and I made A few years ago, my then-4-year-old son and I made these space rock magnets as a Father's Day craft. A passion for space was something that our son shared with his dad at that point, and we created a lot of space art together.

If you have a father or a grandfather who likes space, this is a very quick craft to throw together. You'll need some rocks, some magnets (the stronger, the better), acrylic paints, and a sponge. The sponge is the ticket to creating this out-of-the-world swirl of colours. You can read about the whole process if you search for "space rocks" on my website. ;-)

Happy International Day of Human Space Flight! Sp Happy International Day of Human Space Flight!

Space is full of wonders that we feel compelled to explore, yet space is also full of dangers that human bodies cannot survive unaided.

Scientists and engineers have had to develop special suits to overcome all of the conditions that explorers face out there. If your children want to learn more about them, check out our astronaut paper dolls on the blog.

Spring is a season for many holidays - Easter, Ear Spring is a season for many holidays - Easter, Earth Day, Women's Day, Mother's Day... May the Fourth! :-)

It is also a season of rebirth and rejuvenation. Children’s relationships with their toys can be seasonal too, waxing and waning with novelty and their interests and inspirations.

In the spirit of spring, we made a new pack of magnetic tile building ideas to revitalize your kids’ engagement with their magnetic tiles while building seasonal designs.

You can see in the picture above that we've got a basket of eggs for Easter, a rainbow for Saint Patrick's Day, a guitar for Cinco de Mayo, and Yoda for May the Forth. There are many more designs in the package!

We enjoy making stained glass suncatchers with kid We enjoy making stained glass suncatchers with kids.

First of all, they really are easy and cheap to make. All you need are black glue, sharpie markers, and either laminated sheets or the plastic clamshell containers that came with baking or fruits from the store.

Second, they allow us to put up some decorations on the windows and feel like, “Seasonal decor? Check! We’re ready to celebrate!” And they do look festive and nice. If the sun is shining through the window, our shamrock suncatcher throws cheerful reflections on the walls and curtains.

This was our St. Patrick's craft a couple of years ago, but we also did butterflies, hearts, leaves, and even unicorns. Find them all by searching for "stained glass suncatchers" on our blog!

Birds are a wonderfully diverse group. Let’s tak Birds are a wonderfully diverse group. Let’s take flying, for instance. Peregrine falcons dive from the skies at a speed over 300 km/h (186 mph), which makes them not only the fastest bird but the fastest animal on the planet. Penguins, on the other hand, cannot fly at all. Their wings have evolved into flippers, and they have become proficient swimmers. But if you take ostriches, they can neither fly nor swim. They’re very good runners though.

Children can learn all these – and many more – fun facts with our printable bird flashcards. They are available on our blog if you search for "bird flashcards". There are fifty birds in the set! While this list is far from being exhaustive, it offers a broad overview of bird diversity across the globe.

When making the cards, we initially intended to include an image of each bird with its common name, its Latin binomen, and its native range. This information is certainly useful, isn’t it? But it isn’t really as memorable as it could be, particularly considering how interesting they all turn out to be on closer inspection. So we included a fun fact about every bird, right there on the card.

March is Women's History Month, and here we are ex March is Women's History Month, and here we are exploring it while playing with paper dolls.

One of the many reasons I like using paper dolls for teaching is because they make it easy for kids to relate to the subject of study. In this set, our paper dolls try on the costumes – and roles! – of different inspiring women through history. It is not always an easy topic, for those women had their own share of struggles. But the dolls – with all the culturally diverse costumes – make the conversation a little lighter, while still giving the kids a good idea of what these women accomplished and what kind of time they lived in.

While working on this set, I looked through photographs and portraits of the real women featured in the set.

In some cases, it was pretty straightforward. There are many photographs of Marie Curie, wearing one of her dark dresses, while working in the laboratory. Did you know that Marie Curie chose a dark navy dress as her wedding attire, when marrying fellow scientist Pierre Curie, and then used it as her lab frock for seven years?

In other cases, it was less straightforward. There are not many contemporary portraits of Wu Zetian, which is not surprising, considering she lived 624-705. Fortunately, I managed to find a good depiction of an emperor’s robe from about the same era, and Wu Zetian is known as the only woman to wear the yellow robe, reserved for emperors. You can see the costumes of Marie Curie and Wu Zetian if you scroll to the third photo. And you can find the whole set of paper dolls by following the link in my profile and searching for “famous women paper dolls”!

Our first winter on Prince Edward Island is coming Our first winter on Prince Edward Island is coming to an end. Before coming here, we had heard a variety of accounts on what winter is like, and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I am happy to say that overall I liked it!

It was snowy, but mild. Not a single week passed without above-freezing temperatures. After living in Saskatchewan for six years, it was nice. And with such mild weather, I didn’t mind all the snow. We built snow castles, a snow slide, and lots of snowmen. Sometimes we painted them, too.

Here is the latest of our constructions. I helped Faye build a snow husky dog, at her request, and she later painted it. Our favourite way to paint snow sculptures is with paint crayons, also known as gel crayons. They are really great on paper as well - so vibrant and smooth! The kids always make art with them. Our crayons are from @montmarteart

I am looking forward to spring now too. I can’t wait to see what the island will look like then. #gelcrayons #montmarteart #snowsculptures #snowfun #winteractivities #winteractivitiesforkids #homeschooling #homeschoolingideas #peifamily #peinewcomers #artforkids #kidsactivities #kidsart #kidsartwork #homeschoolmaterials #homeschoolart #homeschoolsupplies
Only girls give gifts on Valentine’s Day in Japa Only girls give gifts on Valentine’s Day in Japan, but a month later, on White Day, they get a gift back! Traditionally, there is only one kind of Valentine’s gift in Japan — chocolate. It comes in different forms. Among them are giri-choco (“obligatory chocolate”), bought at a store for classmates or co-workers, or honmei-choco (“true feelings chocolate”), which is often homemade and given to someone’s true love.
