This free printable dragon and princess card comes with a colouring page and an art prompt on the back. A fun surprise for kids who like to draw!
Like monsters, dragons are often portrayed as being scary. Does it frighten children away? Hardly. A lot of kids seem fascinated by flying magical beasts from legends and fairy-tales. From Puff the Magic Dragon to ancient Chinese myths, dragons have a broad circle of loyal followers. And I confess to be among them. As a matter of fact, before Anselm was born, I had plans to decorate his nursery in a castle theme with knights, dragons and princesses. In practice, I ended up making him a dragon stuffy and buying a stash of dragon picture books. So when we started making our printable Valentine’s Day cards, I couldn’t resist making one with a dragon. Since dragons are often depicted capturing princesses in the stories, I wanted to make it fair and create a card with the story of a dragon who became friends with a princess.
The cards come with a little extra surprise – either a colouring page or a drawing prompt on their back, so the recipient can read the card, then have some fun doodling and colouring. The other cards we have made in this series so far include friendly monsters, birds and sweets.
Colouring pages are old-time favourites, and Anselm and I also love drawing prompts. You draw a few lines, or leave a blotch of colour on a piece of paper, or doodle a little something, but leave the picture incomplete for kids to finish. Sometimes the way to complete the picture is obvious, but other times it can be anything. Drawing prompts are great for exercising creativity and problem solving. The prompt that goes along with this card asks a child to help the dragon create more interestingly shaped puffs of smoke.
For the cards, I painted the designs in watercolours then scanned them, so we could print dozens of copies for everyone. Or even a dozen for my son alone. He loves creating several versions of one prompt.
