People process information differently, and while three main processing methods are defined as auditory, visual and kinesthetic, there are in truth many specific ways to learn. Some of them can be somewhat peculiar. When our son wants to understand something better, he likes to build it.

“Here, I’ve built a Mars Rover with Duplo,”

“Can we make a paper volcano?”

“Look at my Magna-Tile letters!”

We actually started by building letters with Magna-Tiles printable cards! Once Anselm knew them a little, he started experimenting with another of his favourite building materials. So one day I heard, “Mom, look at the letter I built with blocks!”

The blocks we used all come as a part of Standard Unit block sets. We have a Melissa and Doug block set, but there are others like KidKraft block set or ECR4Kids block set. We didn’t need all of them either – we built our alphabet with these fifteen blocks.

In no time, we built the whole alphabet and made printable cards for them too. Even though Anselm can build most of the letters from scratch, we like having the cards around for a few reasons.

  • They’re good for beginners. It’s understandable when a 4-year-old needs a reminder of how a particular letter looks, and the cards act as a reference,
  • The cards add a puzzle-solving element to the activity. Anselm likes to find the exact blocks that he sees on the picture and match them.
  • Even for older kids, cards can act as an inspiration for building, especially since some letters are difficult. I’m still not sure that our “M” is perfect. Send me a picture if you build a better one!

Once the letters are mastered, it’s time to improvise – create new designs and even build words!
