One of the latest additions to our classroom are these pattern blocks. I have seen my educator friends use them before, but only recently got them for my kids. Even though we already have a lot of building materials, these little tiles filled a particular niche. They are sturdy, portable, inexpensive, and they encourage children to create all kinds of interesting designs! Actually, adults also enjoy playing with them, and when we do, we often build shapes that can be offered as challenges to children later on.

I created these printable pattern block designs to challenge my children to build letters with them! It works both for helping children learn the alphabets and for developing the spatial and problem-solving skills that are so useful in math and engineering. The challenge feels more like playing than learning, while engaging both visual and kinesthetic senses and improving fine motor skills.

As a result, children love matching the patterns, and there are two sets of cards included – some that have coloured shapes (for easy matching) and some that are black-and-white (which is a little more challenging and encourages children to pay attention to geometric shapes rather than colours).

As you can see, there are also two scales of cards – one that will allow children to place blocks directly onto the card and match them to the outlines and one that is a convenient size of a flash card that is good for quick reference.

And, of course, there are both uppercase and lowercase letter designs included!
